The term technology roadmap has gained widespread use in industry, academia, and government. A technology roadmap is a high-level visual document that defines and communicates the plan for technology initiatives in the organization. A technology roadmap generally describes why, when, and what technology solutions can be implemented, aligning technology initiatives with short- and long-term business objectives. In other words, a roadmap presents the consensus reached regarding the needs and the potential technologies needed to meet those needs.
